Silas SHABELEWSKA

Silas SHABELEWSKA (b.1963) Photographer, we will present five  works, including her work, Robert Indiana's LOVE series and Peace series.
Polish born (both her parents are Polish) and raised in the South of France. Shabelewska explored photography since the early age of 12. At 16, she starts to learn how to print skillfully in the silver gelatin process. From then on, photography will remain her main passion. In 1984, Shabelewska enrolled at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where she majored in photography, polaroid 20x24 and film & video. Over the years, Shabelewska photographed outside the commercial realm personalities like Leo Castelli and Helmut Newton. However, her main focus is PHOTO BASED ART. She lives & works in New York city since 1985.
Shabelewska uses what photographers call a “purist“ approach to the image without alterations or digital manipulation. Because  she has always been fascinated by the works of Edward Steichen, Stieglitz and others, she wanted to apply a 19th century feeling and technology to a resolutely contemporary approach to the image. The black & white enlargements are selenium toned silver gelatin prints printed on a paper called Classic Charcoal, which gives the image a delicate texture similar to that of a charcoal drawing.  The silver gelatin process is so called because image is formed by grains of metallic silver in the suspension of gelatin layer coated on the supporting material, such as paper, glass plate, or plastic film.  This technology appeared in late 19th century. In her series Roads, texture plays an important factor:  they are hazy, atmospheric, dreamlike.
LOVE: HOMAGE TO ROBERT INDIANA is Shabelewska's latest works along with BRASILIA: HOMAGE To OSCAR NIEMEYER (not shown yet in preparation.)
